Jona Lendering-Livius: Mediocre Historian, Makes Mistakes

Jona Lendering is the host of the Livius.org website which contains errors on ancient antiquity - see for example, his confusion on Macedonia - for more click here...

Lendering's information on ancient Iran is also unreliable and biased. In one of his Classic stupendous errors, he claims “the site of Gotarzes II does not exist today”. This is 100 Percent False (see photo below).
The site of Gotarzes II in Iran that according to Lendering “does not exist today”. Lendering’s error is incredible as he organizes tours to Iran on a regular basis. Lendering is actually an archivist in his professional background.

The Bryn Mawr review has posted the following assessment of  Jona Lendering:

…Lendering's review of Shadows in the Desert: Ancient Persia at War is characterized by the presentation of erroneous information, the arbitrary selection and rejection of information, and ignorance of much of the scholarship in the field of Iranian studies.

Lendering has often written against non-European historians he disapproves of in the internetLendering's most recent victim is Reza Aslan whom he characterizes in a Dutch website as writing "Kwakgeschiedenis" (Kwack/Nonsense History). On another webpage Lendering describes a lecture by Reza Aslan as "...a disaster".

Most recent victim of Jona Lendering's "Review": Reza Aslan (Wikipedia). Lendering sums up Aslan's book on the historical Jesus as follows: " I sincerely wished to give Aslan the benefit of the doubt...but the book is trash."
It seems that Lendering makes a few history mistakes of his own. Just six of Lendering's controversial errors identified in Bryn Mawr are:

1) Lendering believes that Mede Art and Architecture does not exist. This is like his claim that the site of Gotarzes II does not exist. Discussed here in Bryn Mawr

2) Lendering’s confusion over the nature of the ancient Persian navy: he is not aware of the studies of Iranian marine archaeologists of the Aero-Marine Research Center of Malek Ashtar University. Discussed here in Bryn Mawr

Reconstructed Achaemenid ship. Lendering’s statements indicate that he is unfamiliar with the studies of Iranian marine archaeologists of the Aero-Marine research Center of Malek Ashtar University in Iran. The Archaeological wing of this university (under the direction of Dr. Kambiz Alampour) has researched the Achaemenid Navy extensively. Consulting 47 different sources (Iranian and non-Iranian), the Alampour team has reconstructed Iranian vessels of the of the Darius-Xerxes era. As Lendering apparently ignores research studies contradicting his views, this then leads him to make errors - like those with the Achaemenid navy.

3) Confusion over history dates: Lendering’s mix-up regarding Croesus. Discussed here in Bryn Mawr

4) Lendering's belief that the Non-military Consequences of Iranian military history are "irrelevant". Discussed here in Bryn Mawr

5) Lendering believes there is no evidence of Nowruz being known or practiced at Persepolis. Discussed here in Bryn Mawr

6) Lendering claims there are no destructive dangers to any historical sites in Iran. This is utterly false and is another expression of his support for the Mullah-regime ruling Iran. Discussed here in Bryn Mawr

Lendering’s pro-Mullah fraud exposed: (1) ancient Susa almost destroyed for construction of Laleh Hotel (2) Safavid-era inscriptions at Isfahan’s Pol-e-khaju destroyed (3) Kangavar in danger of destruction for hotel construction (4) Persian trooper vandalized at Persepolis (5) Pasargadae site of Cyrus the Great continues to deteriorate because of engineering works. Despite reports and documentation, Jona Lendering, who defends the Mullah regime in Tehran, claims that all such reports are hoaxes.

Instead of learning from his mistakes in a collegial manner, Lendering lashes out by labeling his faultfinders as: “political activists who …share the propaganda of the late Shah” – As noted by Thomas Cool: "Lendering does not reply to...criticism...So, why can’t Lendering simply listen ?"

Lendering has had a history of attacking historians he disagrees with in the internet; he is known for launching smear campaigns in Wikipedia. See motion against Lendering...

Jona Lendering’s controversial writings regarding Iran, Internet slander campaigns (especially in Wikipedia, etc.) have resulted in a public motion against him. See here…

Lendering is especially well-known for his attitudes regarding Cyrus the Great - see:

The Axis of Prejudice: From Khalkhali to Lendering & Their Crusade Against Cyrus the Great

Lendering continues making more errors on ancient Iran – Three more examples below:

1) Lendering’s flawed understanding of the Iranian supreme deity, Ahura-Mazda – for more click here…

2) Misinformation (or ignorance?) by Lendering on Mithraism studies – for more click here…

3) Confusion by Lendering on ancient Persian archery – for more click here…
